Your Telegram unread count should only count what's yours to deal with

Hundreds of unread messages and the fear of missing something meant for you: how to mark everything as read at once, mute channels and groups, take the extra off the Telegram icon, and check what matters on a schedule.

The Telegram icon says 570. Somewhere among those messages there may be a question from a colleague, a rescheduled meeting or a message from someone close to you. Or there may be nothing but replies in big groups and posts from channels you read once a week. To find out, you’d have to go through all of it.

You can’t read it all, and not reading it makes you uneasy. So you open chats just to make the badge go away. Or you stop looking at it altogether and one day really do miss the one message that was meant for you.

This isn’t about discipline. The counter adds a message from someone close to you and a thousand replies in someone else’s group into one number, so it can’t tell you whether anything in there is for you. Below is how to leave only what’s yours on the icon and when to look at it.

Why the number weighs on you

When Telegram announced the counter setting in 2018, it gave exactly this example: “1001” on the icon, even though only one of those messages is important (Telegram 5.0 for iOS). Yet the number looks like a list of unfinished tasks. That’s also how Apple’s guidelines for developers describe it: the badge goes away once you’ve dealt with what’s unread (Human Interface Guidelines). And unfinished things pull you back: according to a 2025 meta-analysis, participants in experiments returned to an interrupted task in about two cases out of three, even when nobody asked them to (Ghibellini, Meier).

The pull lets go once a task has a plan. In a 2011 study, thoughts about unfinished tasks stopped distracting participants as soon as they decided what they would do, when and where, even before they started on the task, although the anxiety remained (Masicampo, Baumeister).

So the solution is this: close out the old backlog in one go, leave only your own matters in the number, and set times to look at it. That last step will be the plan.

How to clear unread messages in Telegram at once

You don’t need to go through old unread messages one by one. First open your private chats: marking all chats as read can’t be undone, and Telegram on desktop warns you about this separately. Mark the rest with a single command:

  • iOS. On the “Chats” tab, tap “Edit”, then “Read All”.
  • Android. Press and hold a folder tab and choose “Mark all as read”. Folder tabs appear only if you’ve created at least one folder.
  • Desktop. If you have folders, right-click a folder and choose “Mark as read”. Telegram will ask you to confirm.

How to sort out notifications in Telegram

Open “Settings” → “Notifications and Sounds”. Notifications there are split by chat type: on iOS these are “Message Notifications”, “Group Notifications” and “Channel Notifications”; on Android and desktop, “Private Chats”, “Groups” and “Channels”.

  • Channels. Turn off notifications for all of them at once. Channel posts almost never wait for a reply from you, and you can read them whenever you feel like it.
  • Groups. Turn them off if in most groups you read but don’t write.
  • Private chats. Leave them on. These are exactly the messages you’re afraid to miss.

You can set up individual chats differently:

  • One important group. Turn on notifications just for it: on iOS, in the group’s profile; on Android, through “Exceptions” in the same settings.
  • A noisy chat you need, but not right now. In the chat menu, choose “Mute” on iOS or “Mute for…” on Android and desktop.
  • A whole folder. On Android, the folder tab menu has “Mute All”.

Why the number stays even with notifications off

Turning notifications off removes sounds and banners, but muted chats can still add to the number on the icon. A separate setting in the same “Notifications and Sounds” section controls this:

  • iOS. In the “Badge Counter” section, turn off “Include Muted Chats”.
  • Android. In the “Badge Counter” section, turn off “Include Muted Chats”.
  • Desktop. In the “Badge counter” section, turn off “Include muted chats in unread count”.

There you can also choose what to count: messages or chats. To count chats, turn off “Count Unread Messages” on iOS and Android or “Count unread messages” on desktop. Then instead of hundreds of messages, the icon will show a few chats.

Inside Telegram itself, muted chats will keep their counters, just in a different, less noticeable color. There’s no separate setting that would remove them entirely (a reply from a Telegram Desktop developer). The chat list will still show where there’s new stuff and how much, but it will no longer go into the number you see on your screen all day.

Item names are taken from Telegram’s official English version; their location may differ slightly between app versions.

How not to miss what matters

Now the number on the icon is made up of private chats and the chats you chose to keep. What’s left is to decide when to look at it. For example, in the morning, after lunch and at the end of the day. That’s the specific plan after which the thought of unread messages stops distracting you: not “I’ll reply sometime”, but “I’ll reply at two, after lunch”.

But you shouldn’t turn everything off either. In a 2019 experiment, 237 people received notifications in different ways for two weeks. Those who got them in batches three times a day felt less stressed and were more attentive than with the usual setup. And with no notifications at all, participants felt more anxious and were more afraid of missing something (Fitz et al.). The study was about notifications, not the counter, but in our view the conclusion is the same: what matters should reach you, just at a predictable time.

How to read channels without bringing the badge back

Channels you read once a week still pile up unread messages after all these settings, just more quietly. When you finally open them, you’ll have to go through twenty chats one after another.

You can gather them in one place. Add these channels to «Essence» Bot: new posts will arrive in a single chat with the bot as short summaries with a link to the original. You don’t need to subscribe to a public channel for this; the bot reads it. So you can remove such a channel from Telegram, and it will stop piling up unread messages. To keep the chat with the bot from becoming a new badge on the icon, mute it like any other chat and open it at the time you’ve chosen.

If the overall picture is enough for a channel, turn on a digest for it in the bot. Then, at a time you choose, you can request an overview of its posts for the last day, three days, a week or another period of up to 30 days, with links to the originals. The overview is built from posts published after you turn it on, so turn it on in advance. The exception is the last day: the bot can load it right away. A summary can miss a detail, so if your decision depends on a post, open the original.

If after all this the icon says 4, those are four conversations waiting for you specifically. You can open them calmly, at the time you’ve chosen. And the channels will wait in one chat until you feel like reading.
