How to Build Your Own Telegram Channel from Foreign-Language Sources and Make Money from It

How to build your own Telegram channel in your native language from foreign-language sources in your niche with «Essence» Bot, when readers need such a channel, and what ways Telegram offers to make money from it.

Many companies sell in several countries and hire people all over the world. A Telegram channel can be built the same way: take material wherever it appears and gather readers in your own language.

In many niches, important news comes out in a language your audience doesn’t read. A company announces a launch in its Japanese-language channel, an industry outlet writes in Chinese. People who don’t know the language learn about it late and from other people’s retellings. Such a reader needs a channel that regularly brings this news into their language.

That’s how Oxford graduate student Jeffrey Ding started in 2018: in his newsletter ChinAI, he translated Chinese authors’ writing on artificial intelligence into English once a week and added commentary. A year later the newsletter had more than 2,800 subscribers, and its translations had been mentioned by the Financial Times and MIT Technology Review. Ding explained the newsletter’s growth by the fact that Chinese specialists read English-language publications, while English-speaking ones hardly read Chinese ones.

Ding translated by hand. Today you can hand reading and summarizing over to a bot and keep the choice of niche and sources for yourself. The description of the bot and of Telegram’s rules is current as of October 17, 2026.

Does your niche need such a channel

Check two conditions: important sources in your niche write in another language, and almost no one retells them in your audience’s language. For example, you follow China’s electric vehicle market and notice that manufacturers’ news rarely appears in English. If, on the other hand, major media retell every piece of news on the topic the same day in your audience’s language, one more channel adds nothing for the reader.

How to build such a channel

You add the channels of your niche to «Essence» Bot and connect your own channel as a publishing destination. You don’t need to subscribe to the sources. After that, the bot summarizes each of their new posts in your channel’s language and publishes the summary in your channel. A summary conveys the gist but can miss a detail, so readers can check exact figures in the original. How to connect a channel is described in the article on auto-posting.

It’s better to set the channel’s language manually. Otherwise it follows the language of the bot’s interface and will change if you change that. The “original text” format doesn’t translate the post, so it won’t work here.

If the standard summary doesn’t fit your channel’s format, you can replace it with your own instruction, for example “a one-line headline, then two lines with the gist”. To do this, you connect your own AI key, you pay for requests to the AI service, and the language of the result still comes from the channel’s settings. More in the article about your own prompt.

You can add a permanent caption under posts, such as a link to your channel or the name of the source. If your readers speak different languages, create one channel per language; the channels can share sources.

How the channel can make money

A channel built from foreign-language sources is monetized with the same tools as any Telegram channel.

  • A share of Telegram’s ad revenue. Owners of public channels with at least 1,000 subscribers can receive 50% of the revenue from ads shown in their channel. The statistics are in Channel Settings → Statistics → Monetization. Telegram can change the program terms at any time.
  • A paid subscription. You can create an invite link to a channel with a monthly fee in Telegram Stars, for example to a separate channel with extended materials.
  • Paid posts and Star reactions. A single post can be unlocked for Stars, and subscribers can support the channel with Stars through a reaction.
  • Sponsored posts. You can sell ads directly, as in any niche channel.

Hello China Tech works in two layers: the author reads Chinese primary sources every day and writes analysis of the tech industry in English. Some materials are open to everyone, and the full deep dives are available with a paid subscription. With a bot, a similar setup is easier to build: the free layer is a stream of summaries, and the paid layer rests on your analysis.

How much the channel earns depends on the number of readers, and the bot doesn’t bring them.

Where an automated channel has limits

  • There is no approval step: if a summary is wrong, the error goes out to the channel. For the first few days, check posts against the originals.
  • The bot doesn’t guarantee that every post will arrive. If missing a single piece of news is critical for you, such a channel won’t work.
  • The bot publishes only posts that come out after you connect it and doesn’t repeat the source’s edits and deletions, and a language change applies only to the next posts.

You can start in «Essence» Bot with a few sources you already read in a foreign language.
